I’ve been debating with myself recently on if I should listen to music during my marathon. In every race, aside from my recent half marathon, I have run music-free. There are a lot of benefits to music-free racing. You can really take in the experience and the crowds and get to know those running around you.
I’m a bit torn on what to do for this marathon however. In the half marathon, my music really came in handy when I was digging deep and pushing throught the last couple miles. I turned on my favorite song and it helped to give me the push to finish strong.
I also know that this marathon isn’t that big in terms of crowd support. While there will be some along the day, it won’t be like many of the large marathons. Since my focus is more on time this year, which has never been the case in the past, I feel like having music might come in handy.
I checked the marathon website and while it is encourage to run without music, it isn’t banned on the course. Decisions decisions.
Right now I am leaning towards no-music, but I thought I would share with you all today some of my favorite songs that would go on my iPod should I decide to use music.
In case you’ve missed it in the past here are some of my other music playlist posts:

Whew! Obviously, I would need more than 20 songs on my iPod to last the entire marathon, but I figured any more would be a bit of overkill! So there you have it. My favorite 20 songs for a marathon.
Some are fast and some are slow, but really anything that keeps me not focused on the pain in my legs, right? 🙂
What are some of your favorite songs right now?
Do you listen to music during a race?
Just finished my run with blank space! My daughters are obsessed with Taylor swift but I often sneak her songs into playlists.
I LOVE that song! I had it on repeat during my workout Tuesday morning.
I have been running without music for about 6 months now, and I don’t even miss it! I ran my marathon 2 weeks ago without music and I was also really nervous about running that long without it. When i needed something to think about, I just thought of song lyrics in my head and that seemed to work. My race also had quite a bit of crowd support, so that probably helped too.
Yeah that is the only thing I am hesitant about. The website even says that many of the roads that you run on are closed to the public, so crowd support is minimal. I guess it may be a race day decision, I’ve never one with it before but then again I’ve never been really going for a specific time range….decisions decisions!
Why not bring it along and then decide on the morning of the marathon? You are going to rock it and, I hope, enjoy both the scenery, the race, and noting how much you have improved by training, nutrition, etc. during the past few months. I can’t wait to hear your race recap!
That is the plan! Thank you so much! I hope so. The scary part of any race (especially the marathon) is you really never know how it is going to go. I am confident in my training though! We shall see what happens 🙂
I usually tuck my ipod into my race belt or a pocket and then that way I can pull it out if need-be in the second half of the race. Better to take it and not need it than not have it when you really do need it!
Very true Mary! Great idea!
i never listen to music, but i downloaded the new TS album before the nyc marathon just in case i needed a little motivation. totally back blank space on your playlist!
